Welcome boost in the Heddon Valley to save UK’s rarest butterfly

The High Brown Fritillary, the UK’s most endangered butterfly, has been thrown a lifeline for 2018 in a new conservation project by the National Trust and partners.

The charity is embarking on ambitious plans to develop 60 hectares of lowland heath and wood pasture – the butterfly’s principle habitat – to give it a fighting chance for the future. The project has been made possible as part of a generous award of £750k made to the National Trust by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Continue reading…

Monty Halls at first South West Outdoor Festival

TV personality and marine biologist Monty Halls, a former Royal Marines Officer who is famous for his televised escapades and adventures all over the planet, will be taking part in the first South West Outdoor Festival, at Heddon Valley in North Devon (23-25 September).

The festival is being supported by numerous well-known names from the outdoor world who either hail from the region originally, or have gravitated here because of the wealth of exciting adventure opportunities that exist in the area.

Britain’s toughest and most scenic trail marathons – are you up for the challenge?

A trio of trail running challenges collectively promise to be one of the highlights of the first South West Outdoor Festival, which takes place in the heart of Heddon Valley in North Devon this September. (23-25 September)

The main running events will take place on the Saturday morning of the weekend-long festival.  There are three distances for trail hounds to choose from:

  • A full off-road marathon-length race
  • A half-marathon event
  • The popular 10km challenge.
