A celebration of the 300th anniversary of landscape gardener Capability Brown, is being held at Prior Park Landscape Garden in Bath.

The National Trust, which cares for Prior Park, is taking part in the national celebrations for the tercentenary of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown with a series of events, classes and workshops throughout June.

Beacons will light up the sky for The Queen’s 90th Birthday

In celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday celebrations, beacons will be lit throughout the land at from 7.30 – 8.30pm on Thursday 21st April 2016.

Ten locations at National Trust places are taking part in this important event marking a significant milestone in the Queen’s life. From Glastonbury Tor in Somerset to Chapel Carn Brea in Cornwall, the most southerly location, and from Potter’s Hill at Woolacombe in North Devon to Thorncombe Beacon on the Golden Cap Estate in Dorset, one of the chain of beacon sites along the south coast used to warn of the approach of the Spanish Armada in 1588.

Horse power at Tyntesfield

A heavy horse has been drafted in to help with the extension of a National Trust woodland play area at Tyntesfield, near Bristol.

The building work has already begun, but Tuppence, a 14 hand Welsh Cob, is due to join the site from Monday 18 April to Wednesday 20 April to help haul timber. The logs she will be moving were felled at Tyntesfield; they measure approximately 28 ft. long and will be used for edging in the play area. Continue reading…

First trip of Brownsea Seahorse

Dennis Medlycott wanted to visit Brownsea Island. It was a simple ambition but, since he depends on his electric wheelchair to get about, he could not get onto the boats taking visitors to the island. When he heard that we were about to trial a new boat, ‘Brownsea Seahorse’, which would be able to take disabled visitors to the island, Dennis offered his advice and came to try out the first service. Here he tells his own story of that first trip to the island:

A flood management demonstration project delivered by the National Trust, JBA Consulting and Penny Anderson Associates has been shortlisted at the 2014 Climate Week Awards.

The Holnicote Multi-Objective Flood Management scheme is one of four finalists in the ‘Best campaign or educational initiative category’.

Based around the catchment of two rivers – the Horner and Aller – the pioneering scheme was set up in 2009 to gather evidence for how land management changes, working with natural processes and partnership working with local people and contribute to reducing flood risk. Continue reading…
